Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

When Hurricane Katrina struck Louisiana in 2005, the original SPCA was flooded and shelter staff evacuated to the Houston SPCA.  Upon returning to New Orleans, the staff operated in a former coffee warehouse in the Algiers neighborhood.  A real estate agent offered up an affordable property, the LA SPCA broke ground one year and two days after Katrina hit, and a new 21,600 square-foot animal rescue and care center was built.
